We welcomed King Arthur to Storybook Farm this June! Don’t be fooled by his size, he is mighty in both body and heart and is quite an accomplished 3-Day Event horse. On behalf of all the children are giving him hugs, kisses, and treats, I offer a very sincere thank you to Meredith Dailey of Huntsville, Alabama for sharing her “BFF” with Storybook Farm. For more information about King Arthur, please see our Meet the Horses page.
More Information
Velvet Brown, the horse-crazy girl in Enid Bagnold’s 1935 novel National Velvet, was brought to life on the big screen by Elizabeth Taylor in 1944. As the story goes, Velvet believed in the impossible – that her horse, Pie, an unseasoned competitor, could win the most prestigious steeplechase in England, The Grand National. She never quit her dream even when difficult circumstances arose. She had unwavering faith in her horse and steadfast determination. She was a hero.
This summer, Storybook Farm was asked to adopt a sweet little dog whom no one wanted because of her disability. This sweet natured Pomeranian had no one to love her. But not for long! On her first day at the farm, she was introduced to our summer riders. The first thing they noticed was her unusual looking face. One eye is missing and her other eye looks like a marble. Sadly, she has no vision at all. But soon, the children’s bewilderment gave way to a heartfelt understanding. For unlike most of us, they could relate to Velvet – both face daily challenges that are hard and scary to overcome.
Our Velvet Brown lives up to her namesake. She bravely ventures into a world she cannot see with unwavering faith. She is our inspiration and reminds us daily that “perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18).
